The World Is Watching
Theme of the Week: Inspired Confidence
Richard Koole
Tuesday, May 13, 2003

Key Bible Verse: … you will not be full of sorrow like people who have no hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13). Bonus Reading:2 Cor. 4:13-18

Because of disease and the lack of proper medical attention, missionary B. W. Woods's wife and only child died. He was left alone, with the locals watching his every move. "They saw him walk to the graves of his wife and child in a quiet, stately manner. One was heard to say, 'I don't know about his religion, but I like the way he buries his dead. We shriek with horror and anguish, but this man acts as if he knows where his dead wife and child are going.'"

I've been with the unsaved as they've faced death. They have no hope, and it shows. Christians are different: They know that the moment their last breath is taken they'll be ushered into the presence of their Lord and Savior, and it shows.

Believers lose jobs and agonize over children; we suffer physical and emotional setbacks; we live with the knowledge of a terminal illness. What the world wants to know is: Do we live what we claim? Is our faith real? When the unsaved see strength in the midst of the storms in our lives, they're drawn to that strength because it offers hope. It's then that we can share with them the true source of our strength—Jesus Christ.

—Richard Koole in Outsmarting Stress

My Response: A time when my hope was on display was …

Thought to Apply: It is impossible for that man to despair who remembers that his helper is omnipotent.

—Jeremy Taylor (British pastor)
