Men of Integrity, May/June 2003

Yell for Help!
Theme of the Week: About Face
Monday, May 19

Key Bible Verse: When he looked … at the high waves, he was terrified and began to sink. "Save me, Lord!" he shouted (Matthew 14:30). Bonus Reading: Luke 18:9–14

I heard a guy on the radio tell how—while he and his family were on vacation at the seashore—he saved a drowning boy's life.

Two junior high boys were out too deep. The man telling the story noticed that one of the two appeared to be in trouble, struggling to keep his head above water. The longer he watched, the more obvious it became to him that this boy—even though he never yelled for help—was losing the struggle.

The man dove into the surf, swam as fast as he could to the boy, who'd nearly succumbed, and grabbing his hand, towed him back to shore. Exhausted, they both dropped onto the sand, gasping for breath.

As their breathing returned to normal, the man asked the boy why he hadn't called for help.

The young teenager looked up into the eyes of his rescuer and admitted, "I was embarrassed and didn't want anyone to know."

I wonder how many men are drowning in sin and bad habits and are just too embarrassed to call out to God, or to anyone else, for help. How many men are overcome by sin simply because they don't cry out?

Kind of dumb, huh?

—Todd Wilson in Indiana

My Response: Am I drowning? I'll call out to God, and to a Christian friend.

Thought to Apply: There is no good news in the gospel unless we first admit the bad news about ourselves. —James Reapsome (journalist)

Holy God, enable me to view sin as you do, so that I am determined to reject it.
