Not a Sermon to Like
Theme of the Week: Focused Freedom
Sunday, May 25, 2003

Key Bible Verse: Preaching the Good News is not something I can boast about. I am compelled by God to do it. How terrible for me if I didn't do it! (1 Corinthians 9:16). Bonus Reading:Jeremiah 6:10-11; 20:7-9

Have some sympathy with us preachers, won't you? It's not an easy way to make a living. The preacher must submit to the biblical text. He doesn't always preach that which he personally understands or believes. Rather it's his duty to preach what the Bible teaches, to preach the faith of the Church.

A minister friend of mine was shaking the hands of people at the door at the end of the Sunday service. One member said, "I really didn't care for what you said in your sermon today."

The preacher replied, "Do you really think I liked what I said? This is what the Gospel of Matthew has to say to us, not what I have to say. I stand under the same judgment of this text as you."

A preacher is a servant of the Word of God. The reason that teaching is difficult to assimilate, hear, and receive is not simply because it's an ancient word from a world of sheep and shepherds, demons and devils, but also because it is a word that challenges the world where we live.

0Prayer for the Week

Lord, help me move beyond "have to" to "want to" in relating to Your commands.
