Men of Integrity, July/August 2003

Java Jolt
Theme of the Week: Hurried Sick
Sunday, August 24

Key Bible Verse: It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night … God gives rest (Psalm 127:2). Bonus Reading: Lamentations 3:25–26

I had a real shock the other day. I was up at about 5:15 A.M. and realized we were out of coffee. So I jumped in the car and went to the store, where I almost bashed my head on the glass door. It didn't open! I looked up to see if I could spot the automatic sensor. Something was wrong.

I was about to walk around to the other side when I noticed a new sign listing new hours for the store. The store had always been open 24/7. But now they were closed from midnight until 6 A.M. What was wrong with these people? Didn't they understand? I was out of coffee!

Actually, it was a good experience for me. Like everyone else I know, I've become used to immediate access to whatever I want, whenever I want it. Now, I could have waited another 45 minutes, but of course I was too busy. I also could have gone home, retrieved the used filter and grounds from the top of the trash can, and reused them. But that's hard to do when you're used to a caramel macchiato with two shots of espresso, nonfat milk, and whipped cream on top.

Eternal Father, I know it's not Your plan for me to feel driven. Please reveal to me Your perspective on my time.
