Wow!
Theme of the Week: Then Sings My Soul
Monday, August 18, 2003

Key Bible Verse: Look up into the heavens. Who created all the stars? …He counts them to see that none are lost (Isaiah 40:26). Bonus Reading:Psalm 19:1-4

Consider the following: A bullet travels about 600 miles per hour. By comparison, light travels at 186,000 miles per second. If by some amazing feat of mechanics, you souped up your minivan to light speed, you could zip across the universe at 186,000 miles per second. Racing at that dazzling speed, you would reach the moon in one and a half seconds. Eight minutes later you would pass the sun. To get to the next nearest star, you would travel four and a half more years at 86,000 miles per second. Even then, you wouldn't have left our galaxy yet. Our Milky Way alone contains a hundred million stars, and to go from one end to the other of the galaxy would take 100,000 years of traveling at the speed of light (and that doesn't include stopping to change the oil in the minivan every thousand years).

To reach the nearest galaxy, which contains hundreds of millions of stars like our own sun, would take 2.2 million years. And that is just the tip of the universe. Scientists believe that from earth we can see over 500 million galaxies, each containing hundreds of millions of stars. And that's just what we can see. Only God knows what lies beyond, because He made it all.

—Todd Wilson in Indiana

My Response: To renew my awe at God's handiwork, I'll…

Thought to Apply: To make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.

—Carl Sagan (astronomer)
