Image Bearers
Theme of the Week: Then Sings My Soul
Thursday, August 21, 2003

Key Bible Verse: So God created people in his own image; God patterned them after himself (Genesis 1:27). Bonus Reading:Colossians 1:15-18

B ill Moyers: Do you see yourself as made in the image of God?

Avivah Zornberg: "Image"—tselem in Hebrew—is less than and not identical to the model. At the heart of that word is the word "shadow." …Once you have a shadow, then you know that the object that's casting the shadow is substantial, is real. So if the human being is God's shadow, that says something about the reality of God.

Roberta Hestenes: Another thing I get from the story is that life is a gift. I didn't give it to myself. I'm responsible for it, but I receive it and should feel gratitude for it.

Bill: Do you ever feel the contradiction—composed as we are of both the dust of the earth and the breath of God?

Roberta: That's the essence of what it means to be human. The dust is so real—the finiteness, the dependence, the fragility, the brokenness, the struggle. And yet there's this longing inside us, this hunger and yearning for joy and a sense of self-transcendence.… We're not content simply to be dust returning to dust. Because we bear the image of God within us, we long for something more than dust.

—the Public Broadcasting System "Genesis" series

Thought to Apply: Only man was not created by the word of God. Man was created by the hands of God as a potter works in clay.

—Avivah Zornberg (Torah lecturer)

My Response: I'll live as God-breathed dust, exalted humility.

Adapted from Genesis (Doubleday, 1996) by permission.
