Honor from Dishonor
Theme of the Week: Nice Recovery!
R. Geoffrey Brown
Monday, August 4, 2003

Key Bible Verse: Bring Mark with you when you come, for he will be helpful to me (2 Timothy 4:11). Bonus Reading:Acts 13:13; 15:36-41

Andrew White, the president of Cornell University, had a student who kept mouthing off in the classroom. But White stood by the smart-aleck, won his friendship, and encouraged him. That student, however, was later expelled because of his indirect connection with a tragic event in which another student was killed. Before leaving, he came to President White and said, "Thank you for what you've tried to do for me. I promise I'll make a man out of myself yet."

Later, as the Civil War broke out, he enlisted. Then came Gettysburg. There a new brigadier general, just promoted for his bravery and fidelity, was given a mistaken, hopeless command to attack the Confederate Army. Yet he led a gallant charge against impossible odds—and fell behind Confederate lines. That brigadier general, E. J. Farns-worth, was the same student who'd been expelled from the university. Farnsworth had made good on his promise to make a man of himself.

No matter the mistakes, blunders, or failures, honorable success is possible given the will and a little help from our friends. And we do have a Friend who sticks closer than a brother—Jesus Christ.

—R. Geoffrey Brown in Preaching Today

My Response: Despite my failure in _____, I'll be a man of honor.

Thought to Apply: You don't drown by falling in the water; you drown by staying there.

—Edwin Louis Cole (Christian men's movement leader)
