Classified Prayers
Theme of the Week: He Still Answers
Monday, July 21

Key Bible Verse: I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me … those who trust in the Lord will never lack (Psalm 34:4, 10Psalm 34:4, 10).

The family station wagon was about to die. Tom saw no way to pull together the funds for even a good used vehicle to replace it. The more he scoured the classified ads for something he could afford, the more discouraged he got over his inability to provide for his family.

One night after supper, Tom took the difficult step of telling his family his thoughts about the situation. As they sat around the kitchen table, looking at the problem together, someone suggested that as a family they ask for God's help. Bowing their heads, they prayed. Offhandedly, someone prayed that it would certainly be great if God would give them a car that was especially safe— "like a Volvo or something."

Two weeks after the family prayer time, Tom got a phone call from a local businessman. Only one or two other people knew about his family's need, but this one had kept it in mind. He'd learned his company had a business vehicle sufficiently depreciated to be due for replacement. The businessman told Tom that it had some mileage on it but had been well maintained. He'd be glad to sell this red Volvo to him for $1.00!

My Response: Here's how God answered prayer for me when I was in a bind:

Thought to Apply: When life knocks you to your knees—well, that's the best position in which to pray, isn't it?—Ethel Barrymore (actress)
