In the early 1990s, I went with Robert Wise to Israel to work on the novels we were writing in the Millennium series. Near the end of our stay, I attended the service of a messianic congregation in Jerusalem. Its members were Jews who had accepted Jesus as their Messiah.

Using earphones to hear a translation in English, I was worshiping in the synagogue at the moment the rabbi explained the congregation's current needs. "We have many believers in Yeshua [Hebrew for Jesus]," the rabbi explained, "but we need counselors. Today let's pray that God will send us a psychiatrist, who can teach us about helping people with psychological problems."

The group began to pray, but I almost couldn't believe what I'd heard. Following the service, I walked forward and spoke to the rabbi. "I'm a psychiatrist," I said. "When do you want me to come?"

The rabbi was startled, obviously shocked.

The following year, I returned and trained lay counselors from all over Israel, helping the national messianic community expand its ministry. Those training sessions proved to be exciting and significant. [continued 7/23]
