The day after the first meetings in a church, the visiting evangelist went downtown to buy a pair of shoes. Little did he know that the sales clerk, an antagonistic unbeliever, had attended the meeting the night before.
Recognizing the evangelist, she was deliberately rude and insulting to see how he'd react. She must be having a rough day, he thought, but responded politely and went ahead and bought a pair.
That evening, when he started to put the new shoes on, he discovered that one was two sizes smaller than the other. Since they were the same size when he'd tried them on, he realized they'd been switched on purpose. When he returned to the store, next day, the woman again argued and insulted him, but he remained polite.
That evening when the evangelist gave the invitation, the first person down the aisle was the shoe clerk.
What should separate us from unbelievers is how we treat with love and kindness our next-door neighbors, the store clerks, and the people who work on our cars.
