Why Muhammad Listened
Theme of the Week: The Genuine Article
Wednesday, July 30

Key Bible Verse: Let your lives shine brightly before them (Philippians 2:15). Bonus Reading: Philippians 2:12–15

Air Force major Ed Lorenzini was sent to Air Command and Staff College in Montgomery, Alabama. In his section was an animated man from Egypt who talked a lot.

But one day Muhammad was quiet. Ed asked what was wrong. The salary Muhammad, his wife, and two children were trying to live on, he learned, wasn't cutting it. They'd been forced to sell their car. A friend had boasted that he'd arrange a good deal for him to buy another, but hadn't followed through.

Ed and Elizabeth had just bought a van, and hadn't decided what to do with their third car. Holding up the keys, Ed said, "Here, borrow my car." Muhammad was dumbfounded. "I mean it," Ed said. "Just drive me home first."

An excited Muhammad called his wife. Ed overheard him tell her how his Muslim friend failed to help, but this Christian classmate did.

Muhammad's family drove the car for four months—on Lorenzini's insurance! The families spent some time together. Once, Muhammad asked to hear more about Jesus and what He meant to the Lorenzinis. When Muhammad returned to Egypt, Ed gave him an Arabic-language "Jesus" video.

My Response: To which coworker or neighbor in crisis can I demonstrate love?

Thought to Apply: When the people see that you truly love them, they will hear anything from you. —Richard Baxter (Puritan leader)
