'What's the Plan, Lord?'
Theme of the Week: He Still Answers
David Shenk
Friday, July 25, 2003

Key Bible Verse: "He sent his angel to rescue his servants who trusted in him" (Daniel 3:28). Bonus Reading:Daniel 3:16-27

It was about 10:30 on a foggy February night with freezing rain. Chicago's O'Hare Airport was in bedlam because scores of departures were canceled, including my Elkhart-bound flight. I walked to the South Bend-bound gate, learned that they still hoped to fly, and checked in.

Then I sat down to figure how to get from South Bend to Elkhart. I was recovering from the flu and coughing. My poor night vision ruled out renting and driving a car through fog and ice. I prayed, "Lord, what's the plan? I don't think You want me to sleep in an airport tonight. I hate to call anyone on a night like this to meet me long after bedtime. Please help me!"

Just then a man with a red cap elbowed toward me. "Hi, David Shenk," he said, "I'm Ken Kauffman from Goshen."

Totally surprised, I asked, "When have we met?"

"Don't you remember?" Ken teased. "Thirty years ago, I was a freshman at Eastern Mennonite College and you were a senior."

Ken was flying to South Bend, where his daughter met him. They gladly drove along treacherous back roads to take me to Elkhart. "Ken," I said, "tonight God sent me an angel wearing a red cap."

—David Shenk in Surprises of the Christian Way

My Response: Do I see this as a coincidence—or God's response to David's prayer?

Thought to Apply: When I pray, coincidences happen. When I don't pray, coincidences don't happen.

—William Temple (British church leader)
