Eventually Jim and Connie Phillips found themselves paired with Larry and Ann McGraw. Because of each couple's growing public school experience, they saw a need for both mentoring and sexual abstinence teaching. So together they formed a support group at our church for this ministry. Then they developed and taught a weeklong sexual abstinence program, called Excel, that they've now used in nearly all the public junior high schools in their Little Rock district. To follow up, they're starting "Class Act" clubs. The pay-off for their support group's efforts is federal funding received to hire a program director and two part-time staff.
Today they're welcomed with open arms by 13 different schools in our county. More than 3,500 students are involved with Excel, as well as 700 adult volunteers. "Sixty-five local churches, besides Fellowship, have stepped in and contributed time and resources for their particular area schools," Connie says.
Jim and Connie are no longer in the stands as spectators. They're fully deployed with a faith that has not only broken a sweat but is filled with the life-giving passion Jim once dreamed about.
