I was stunned by Rudy's eagerness, sincerity, and honesty. I reassured him that the conduct of God's family is quite distinct from that of Party U. We began to talk. It was a pleasure to see Rudy understand for the first time that God isn't embarrassed by the sexuality of his creation. Rudy felt better knowing that sex was God's idea. Rudy felt worse knowing how he'd misused, even abused, his own sexuality. He was impressed to learn that he was marked by the image of God. And he was embarrassed to confess how he'd so casually vandalized that image. He grew to understand the simultaneous sorrow and joy of being a sinner and having a Savior.
Rudy wanted to honor God with a new way of living a new life in God's family. Karen seemed to know the conduct rules of the kingdom, and he didn't. Some of the information I passed on made a lot of sense to Rudy. Other bits of guidance surprised him, and we had to confirm the truth of the advice in the manual—Scripture. Sometimes Rudy would respond, "You're kidding, right?" And other times, "You were right, and I'm not kidding!" Through it all Karen found that sexuality and holiness are not mutually exclusive.
