The first Jews for Jesus New York City witnessing campaign roused extreme hostility, especially in the Diamond District, where large numbers of Hasidic Jews worked. "Nine of us were surrounded by two or three hundred angry Hasidim," remembers Mitch Glaser. "I actually feared that we wouldn't walk away unharmed." When police arrived, however, the angry mob was disbanded, and the team of campaigners was escorted to safety.

Back at its New York headquarters, leader Moishe Rosen told the group they should expect more threats of violence, and that some would be carried out. He then distributed blank cards. Team members were to write yes or no to indicate whether they were willing to continue with a style of ministry that might elicit a violent response.

"As I sat there, fingering my blank card," Mitch writes, "it seemed like hours instead of minutes. I glanced around the room at my fellow workers, and a sense of our all being in it together, and able to depend on one another gave me the courage to vote 'yes.' The vote was unanimous. We all felt strengthened and encouraged by our unity of purpose in the Lord."
