The Single Edge
Theme of the Week: Army of One

Key Bible Verse: I want you to do whatever will help you serve the Lord best, with as few distractions as possible (1 Corinthians 7:35). Bonus Reading:1 Cor. 7:29-38

During college, Ricardo's girlfriend, Jennifer, spent a summer serving in inner-city Los Angeles. She challenged Ricardo to go on a spring-break trip to L.A. with the same ministry. He did and, moved by racism issues, returned for the summer. Then a South African pastor asked him to think about justice globally. In response, Ricardo moved to Soweto, working for racial reconciliation in South Africa.

One would expect that Ricardo and Jennifer would get married soon after graduation. Not so. "We've been dating for four years now," Ricardo said. "I'd love to be married, but she has lots more to see before settling down." Jennifer is working in a refugee camp in northern Thailand and thinks her next stop will be Amsterdam.

As singles, Ricardo and Jennifer have the mobility to travel freely to serve. They could have chosen to work together overseas as a married couple. But as appealing as that might be, both understand that being where they can actively help accomplish God's work and purposes is more important. Ricardo said, "I know I'm where I belong right now. You couldn't tear me away from this place."

—Albert Hsu in Singles at the Crossroads

My Response: Is my quest for a mate obsessive, or submitted to God's wider will?

Thought to Apply: Keep from me Thy loveliest creature, till I prove Jesus' love infinitely sweeter.

—Charles Wesley (written during his courtship)

0Prayer for the Week
