If you think the race problem in America has been solved, check out this quote: "This is a white academy in a white town in a white country—and by God it's going to stay that way. We are determined to rid this place of the black blight on our community. Those like you have been run off or killed. You will also disappear."
Is this a hate-filled letter left over from the 1950s or '60s when race relations in our country were appalling? No. Sadly enough, it's a letter received on April 20, 2001, by LaKeisha Wolf, president of the Black Caucus at Penn State University. According to Newsweek magazine, black students have long felt unwelcomed, isolated, and uncomfortable at Penn State. LaKeisha felt compelled to wear a bulletproof vest and was escorted by bodyguards the university provided. Student protesters jolted the university into making minor changes, but a respected institution of higher learning should have done more.
We have a long way to go when some of the best and brightest of our white students in one of our top universities can make life terrifying for some of the best and brightest black students.
