What Sank the Bismark
Theme of the Week: Internalizing God's Word
Wednesday, September 24

Key Bible Verse: Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path (Psalm 119:105). Bonus Reading: Psalm 119:105–128

In World War II, the most dominating battleship ever built terrified the English coast. The Germans' Bismark displaced 52,600 tons, carried eight 15-inch guns, and outran every British ship. When a reconnaissance plane spotted the Bismark, on May 24, 1941, the fleet was sent to intercept it.

The Bismark promptly destroyed the first ship to reach it. Only three of the Hood's two thousand crew members survived. On May 26, more ships caught up with the Bismark. The great ship began pulling away like always. But suddenly it began to zigzag, did a big U-turn, and headed toward the British fleet. The fleet attacked with shells and torpedoes, and sank it.

Do you know why? After the Bismark destroyed the Hood, a torpedo-carrying British biplane tracked it and launched its torpedoes. One happened to hit the Bismark on the rudder, causing it to lose steering control. You can have all the speed, firepower, and engineering known to man, but if you can't navigate, you're in trouble.

That's what happens when we don't know our Bibles. We run out of control at the mercy of the enemy because we have no connection with the mind of our Captain.

—Tommy Nelson in The Problem of Life with God

My Response: How well is my "rudder" connected to "the Bridge"?

Thought to Apply: The Bible is God's chart to steer by, to show you where the harbor is, and how to reach it without running on rocks.—Henry Ward Beecher
