Well Planted
Theme of the Week: Internalizing God's Word
Thursday, September 25

Key Bible Verse: "So commit yourselves completely to these words of mine" (Deuteronomy 11:18). Bonus Reading: Deuteronomy 11:18–21

Aim to learn one verse each week. Once you see a verse that looks like good seed, follow four planting procedures.

1. Theme it. It helps to have a category for the verse—a handle that helps pull it up when it's needed. Whether it's "prayer," "worry," "temptation," or "servanthood," assign and learn a handle with the Scripture.

2. Share it. If togetherness can help Weight Watchers lose weight, it can help Scripture Sowers, too. Moses told the Hebrews to learn God's words together as a family. Don't try to develop this discipline alone—buddy up!

3. Review it. Write it on a card and go over your verse as you drive, jog, shop, or shower. That's what the Bible calls "redeeming the time."

4. Use it. What you don't use, you lose. We try to look for a real-life place where we can plug in what we've planted. Recently our pastor spoke about the dependability of God's Word. After the service as the kids and I walked to our car, I asked, "What verse about the Word tells us that God wrote it?" The sharing came as we said it together—thus reviewing it. It enriched the sermon we'd just heard.

My Response: The verse I'll commit to memorize this week is …

Thought to Apply: Make it your first morning business to understand some part of the Bible clearly, and daily to obey it in all that you understand.—John Ruskin
