Men of Integrity, September/October 2003

Slow Fix
Theme of the Week: Internalizing God's Word
Friday, September 26

Key Bible Verse: Guide my steps by your word, so I will not be overcome by any evil (Psalm 119:133). Bonus Reading: Psalm 119:129–152

My father was an expert at finding fault, particularly in his firstborn. I resented for years the way he belittled me. During my last year of college, however, my involvement in a campus Christian ministry stimulated my interest in the Word of God. To open its pages and drink up the richness of its insights became my greatest delight. Over time, the Word had its effect, and I came to see the folly and sinfulness of holding a grudge against my father. I was able to forgive him and release my terrible anger. He gained respect for me and my belief.

When Dr. Paul Meier conducted a study of personal adjustment among students at a midwestern seminary, he suspected a link between the length of time a student had been a Christian and his spiritual and emotional maturity. That proved not to be the case. "The factor that made the difference," Meier discovered, "was Scripture meditation. Students who had practiced almost daily Scripture meditation for three years or longer came out, statistically, significantly healthier and happier than students who did not." Meditation isn't a quick fix, but it holds out a solid promise of transformation.

Thought to Apply: It's never sufficient simply to read God's Word. It must penetrate deep within us so we don't sin in thought, word, or deed.—Dietrich Bonhoeffer
