'Now that You Know This'
Theme of the Week: Going for Broke
Tuesday, September 2, 2003

Key Bible Verse: Work hard and cheerfully at whatever you do … working for the Lord rather than for people (Colossians 3:23). Bonus Reading:Colossians 3:22-4:1

Unfairness is part of life on planet Earth, as Albert Black understands better than most. "There'll always be limited resources," he says, "Some form of discrimination usually determines who gets what. Like my father used to say, 'Okay, so the coach doesn't like you… Okay, so the teacher's giving you a hard time'—he'd never argue with me on that. Instead he'd say, 'Now that you know this, what are you going to do about it?' The same applies to me in business. Now that I know that minorities are discriminated against, what am I going to do about it?

Albert freely admits that one reason for On-Target Supplies & Logistics' early success was that they were being used to demonstrate that racism wasn't a problem in Dallas. "Companies hired us, then turned around and boasted, 'See, we don't have a race problem.' But on our side of the equation, we've had to overprove, overprove, overprove. We've had to dispel the myth that minorities can't do the job with an exhibition of excellence and the consistent delivery of value—not only for our customers, but for our employees, partners, and financial backers." [continued 9/4]

My Response: Am I motivated to achieve—or to excuse?

Thought to Apply: Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.

—John Wooden (basketball coach)
