Harvard Rules Theme of the Week: Internalizing God's Word William & Randy Petersen Tuesday, September 23, 2003

Key Bible Verse: "And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:32). Bonus Reading:Psalm 119:25-48
In 1636 the Puritan colonists were absorbed with skirmishes with Indians and disputes with political leaders back in England. Yet the Massachusetts Bay Colony members committed 400 pounds to set up a college in a town they named Cambridgeafter the alma mater of many of them. Two years later a young minister named John Harvard died, leaving half his estate to the school project. Naturally they named it after him.
The school clarified its goals with a "Rules and Precepts." Three of the first four:
- "Every one shall consider the main end of his life and studies to know God and Jesus Christ, which is eternal life.
- "Seeing the Lord giveth wisdom, every one shall seriously by prayer in secret seek wisdom of Him.
- "Every one shall so exercise himself in reading the Scriptures twice a day that they be ready to give an account of their proficiency
both in theoretical observations of language and logic, and in practical and spiritual truths."
Harvard adopted as its motto [today's Key Bible Verse]. These settlers realized that their best freedom lay in the knowledge of God's truth.

My Response: One way I'm growing in knowledge and application of God's Word is
Thought to Apply: A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education.
