Men of Integrity, November/December 2003

The Drop
Theme of the Week: High-Stakes Adenture
Sunday, December 14

Key Bible Verses: Be sure to honor people like him. For he risked his life for the work of Christ (Philippians 2:29–30). Bonus Reading: 1 Corinthians 2:25–30

The heat, radiating from the baked tarmac and bleached buildings, hit me as I stepped off the plane. A gust of wind felt like the exhaust of a bus. Welcome to the Middle East!

I felt jet lagged and sad: it was Father's Day and I was missing my kids. I knew no one in the entire country and felt very alone. You can imagine my joy when I saw a man holding a sign for "Mack." Kevin, a tentmaker missionary, met with me outside customs in the airport.

"Here's a list of potential contacts at the university," he said.

"Thanks," I said.

"Here's how you catch the public transport," he said.

"Okay," I said with disappearing hopes that he might give me a lift.

"Now remember, we haven't met, okay? I know you understand," he said without waiting for my response.

He'd carefully written out the lists and instructions, and he took off. I understood. Even our meeting in the airport put him in a precarious position. Still, it was hard watching him leave.

In light of what You endured for me, Savior, empower me to move out of my comfort zone for You.
