I was at the Redskins training camp in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, when I received a phone call from an attorney in Oklahoma. Some creditors insisted I'd signed for a loan on two apartment complexes and owed a quarter of a million dollars! I knew I'd never personally signed on the loans. Apparently my name had been forged.
Enraged, I called my friend and spiritual adviser George Tharel. For the first few minutes of the call, I ranted like a wild man. When I finally stopped to take a breath, George quietly interrupted. "Listen to you," he said calmly. "Is God in charge of your life? Is God bigger than this? You sound like someone who's coming apart."
His words brought me up short, and I realized he was right. There was no need to justify myself to George; he already accepted me unconditionally. Because of our relationship, George had earned the right to speak bluntly and directly into my life. His mild rebuke checked me right there and sparked in me an entirely different attitude. It's amazing that a five-minute conversation with a godly person could have such a profound effect. But it does when the relationship is established and maintained according to God's game plan.
