Rick Myatt got into Claremont McKenna College with a Cal-Grant scholarship for 80 percent of his costs. He got involved in campus witness and, as a sophomore, organized Bible studies.
But when Rick's older brother graduated from UCLA, the Cal-Grant administrators figured the Myatt family needed less scholarship money. Rick's grant was cut by $1,500. "We just can't swing it financially," said their dad, a high school teacher.
The company where Rick worked summers as an engineer's aide offered him a permanent position. And California State U. opened a campus in Bakersfield, his hometown. Maybe God was telling him to work full time and take night classes at Cal State. He decided to take the job if nothing else turned up before the September 7 deadline for telling Claremont his plans.
The evening before, the phone rang for Rick: "I hear you're thinking about leaving Claremont McKenna," said an admissions officer.
"That's correct."
"If money's the reason, I've found a scholarship for you. Would that let you stay?"
"Depends on the amount."
"Let's see. Yes, It's for $1,500."
"I'll be there!"
