Bridge Out!
Theme of the Week: High-Stakes Adventure
Thursday, December 18, 2003

Key Bible Verse: There is a wide-open door for a great work here, and many people are responding. But there are many who oppose me (1 Corinthians 16:9). Bonus Reading:Philippians 1:12-19

When written in Chinese," President John Kennedy said, "the word crisis is composed of two characters—one represents danger; the other represents opportunity." This statement certainly applies to the missions endeavor.

Years ago a storm hit hard in southern Mexico, washing out an essential bridge between two key cities. Hoping to quickly reopen the traffic artery, a large group gathered for a night of hurried repair.

Larry Myers, of Mexico Ministries, had labored among those people, but had struggled to build rapport with them. Though he had previously planted churches in numerous Mexican communities, there he found spiritual resistance. He wondered how to reach the people. He prayed. Then he saw that their crisis provided him with an opportunity.

Larry purchased a truckload of tacos and drove with them to the work site. When he arrived, he distributed the food, then pitched in, working alongside the villagers. That broke the ice, and the upshot is that the city shifted in a positive spiritual direction. It's now a key location in his national outreach, with a church, school, and hospital.

My Response: In a crisis, do I focus on the danger or the opportunity?

Thought to Apply: Watch out for emergencies. They are your big chance.

—Fritz Reiner (symphony orchestra conductor)
