Green Light?
Theme of the Week: Step-at-a-Time Guidance
Tuesday, December 30, 2003

Key Bible Verse: Then Gideon said to God, "If you are truly going to rescue Israel as you promised, prove it to me in this way" (Judges 6:36). Bonus Reading:Judges 6:14-16, 33-40

Kim came to my office desperate for help because her husband Tony was ready to desert her. He reluctantly agreed to talk with me. After recounting the ups and downs of ten years of married life, Tony said, "As much as this is going to hurt Kim and our daughter, I feel it's the right thing to do."

"How do you think God feels about your decision?" I asked.

"When I first considered ending the marriage," Tony responded, "I got in my car and started driving. For an hour I drove around town praying that God would tell me what to do. Finally I said, 'God, see that traffic light up there? If you don't want me to leave Kim, turn the light red before I cross the intersection. Otherwise, I'm going through with my plan for a divorce.' The light stayed green."

God isn't schizophrenic. He'll never give you the green light to do something He's clearly prohibited in His Word. Similarly, the person who prays, "Lord, if you want me to stop this affair, show me by having my partner break up with me tonight" is out of bounds. God already has provided clear guidance on this issue. Why should He need to speak again?

—Robert Jefress in Hearing the Master's Voice

My Response: In what area am I resisting God's instruction?

Thought to Apply: Where God has put a period, do not change it to a question mark.

0Prayer for the Week

Sovereign Lord, teach me to trust You for the next step, even when I can't see the big picture.
