Twigs and Sisal
Theme of the Week: The Gift of Generosity
James Emery White
Monday, December 8, 2003

Key Bible Verse: Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop (2 Corinthians 9:6). Bonus Reading:2 Corinthians 9:1-15

A family committed to support five orphans in Haiti above and beyond their giving to their local church. The family rode second-hand bikes. Their Christmas presents weren't the latest, must-have item. Yet for more than a decade the family stayed with its commitment to feed, clothe, and educate the Haitian children.

Then the father learned that his company was sending him to Haiti on business. He took the entire family so they could meet the children they'd been supporting. They rented a jeep and drove out to the village where their young friends lived. The five children were waiting in front of the school. As the jeep pulled up, they raced over to embrace the family, weeping with joy and gratitude. They gave the family Christmas tree ornaments they'd fashioned from twigs and sisal.

Throughout the ride back to Port-au-Prince after the visit, the family sat in silence. Wondering if his sharing lesson had backfired, the father finally asked what was wrong. "Nothing," his daughter answered. "I was just thinking that nothing else we could have done with our money over the last ten years would have made us happier than we are now."

—James Emery White in Long Night's Journey into Day

My Response: I experienced the joy of giving when …

Thought to Apply: Nothing is really ours until we share it.

—C. S. Lewis (British scholar and writer)
