Why It's the Best Policy
Theme of the Week: Pass It On

Key Bible Verse: Though everyone else in the world is a liar, God is true (Romans 3:4). Bonus Reading:Hebrews 6:16-18

When my daughter Kelly was in fourth grade, several students in her class took an object off the teacher's desk while she was out of the room, broke it, and later lied about it. When the teacher turned to Kelly, she answered her questions directly and honestly.

The next day I took Kelly out for breakfast at our favorite restaurant and told her I was proud of her because she'd done the right thing, in spite of any pressure she felt or harassment she may have gotten from her classmates. But I wanted to accomplish more than just praise her moral behavior, so I asked her, "Honey, why is lying wrong?"

"Because the Bible says it's wrong," she said confidently.

"But," I pressed her, "why does the Bible say it's wrong?"

"Because God commanded it," she answered.

"But why did God command it?" I asked.

She looked nonplussed, then admitted, "I don't know."

I took her hands in mine and locked eyes with her. I wanted to be sure she understood and remembered what I was about to tell her. "Because God is truth, Kelly. Truth comes from His nature, and whatever is contrary to God's nature is sin."

—Josh McDowell in The Father Connection

My Response: I'll find ways to move beyond "do's" and "don'ts" to "whys."

Thought to Apply: If knowing God is the most vital experience in the world, how dare we leave the responsibility for instruction to someone else?

—Gladys Hunt
