Key Bible Verse: "Anyone who is willing to hear should listen and understand!" (Matthew 13:9). Bonus Reading:Matthew 13:10-16

An American Indian was in downtown New York, walking with his friend who lived in the city. Suddenly he said, "I hear a cricket."

"You've got to be crazy," his friend replied.

"No, I'm sure I hear one."

"It's the noon hour. There are people bustling around, cars honking, taxis squealing, noises from the city. I'm sure you can't hear it."

"I'm sure I do." He listened attentively and then walked to the corner, across the street, and looked all around. Finally he zeroed in on a shrub in a large cement planter on the corner. He dug beneath the leaves and pulled out the cricket.

His friend was astounded. But the Cherokee said, "No. My ears are no different from yours. It simply depends on what you're listening to. Here, let me show you." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a handful of change—a few quarters, some dimes, nickels and pennies. He dropped it on the concrete. Every head within a block turned. "See what I mean?" he said as he began picking up his coins. "It all depends on what you are listening for."

Not only must Christians have "ears to hear," but they must learn what to listen for.

—Tim Hansel in When I Relax I Feel Guilty

My Response: Can I pick out God's voice among all the noises in my life?

Thought to Apply: To approach God requires neither art nor science, but only a heart resolutely determined to apply itself to nothing but Him.

0Prayer for the Week

O Lord, keep the world from filling my life, leaving no space for hearing and delighting in You.
