I just need more self-discipline," Jerry told me. "I know I have the potential to reach my goals, but I just can't make myself get around to doing it all."
"Where will you get this 'self-discipline'?" I asked.
"What do you mean?"
"If you had self-discipline, you'd have done the things you haven't done. So obviously you don't have it. Where are you going to get it?"
"By disciplining myself."
"You're not 'getting' it," I said. "If you could discipline yourself, you'd be there. So, where're you going to get it?"
"I don't guess I know," he admitted sheepishly. "Where can I get it?"
"It's not hard to figure out. Everyone gets it the same way. Others discipline us; then we can do it for ourselves. Some people get disciplined by others early in life and internalize it into their character. Others don't get disciplined early on; they lack self-discipline until they get it from others. It's how God designed us to grow."
"How? How do I get disciplined by others?"
"Now you've asked the $64,000 question."
