When I was in fifth grade, Dad and I hiked through a nearby stretch of woods one evening to watch the sunset over a small lake. "Son," Dad asked abruptly, "do you want to see a big water moccasin?"
"Yes, sir," I answered.
"Look!" he pointed. Sure enough, on the bank was a thick, muscular five-footer.
I said, "Wow, that's a big snake!" I looked to my right. "Dad, is that another one?"
Dad looked. "Yes, Son. Amazing! We've seen two big snakes in 30 seconds."
Then I said, "Dad, is that another one?"
The water moccasins must have been in some kind of mating frenzy. Within minutes we saw 50—around our feet, in the water. I panicked.
"Son," my father said, "jump on my back!"
My vertical leap would have embarrassed Kobe Bryant. I clung to Dad's strong back and buried my face in his shirt as he shone his flashlight on the winding path and negotiated our safe exit. I was so relieved, knowing Dad was in control of the situation.
Many of us feel trapped by apprehension and anxiety. Our heavenly Father says, "Jump on my back. I'm in control. I'll shine my light and take you through."
