For the first time, Robert's vague faith had run up against difficulties beyond his human resources. We talked about how Christ wanted to live in him. "Friend," I said, "you're a trained, talented professional, and you really love your kids. But in both areas you're inadequate to the challenges—by yourself. You need God's help. He's ready to use abilities you don't know you have and multiply your efforts with the gifts of wisdom, vision, and power that only He can provide. Your feeling of inadequacy can either discourage you or be the beginning of new courage." In prayer, Robert confessed his inadequacy and asked the Lord to fill him with superhuman power.

Since then, Robert has faced more demanding opportunities at work, and the challenges at home haven't stopped. But he's learned to rely day by day on the Lord's adequacy. Recently, when I ran into Robert, he said, "The moment I get comfortable, thinking I can handle things myself again, I get pushed into a new responsibility beyond what I can tackle alone. But the bigger the challenge, the more strength and skill I'm given."
