God intended marriage partners to be attractive to one another so that their physical union might strengthen the bond of their hearts. One way we husbands strengthen this bond is by affirming the physical and personal beauty we cherish in our wives. We do this by our loving words, by showing them that we desire them—with an affectionate hug as well as with the caring lovemaking the Bible honors—and by providing the loving support that enhances their attractiveness.
The Bible says Jesus made his bride, the church, radiant to him. Husbands should do the same with their brides. I love to shop for clothes with my wife, not because my tastes are any good but because I enjoy seeing what makes her feel beautiful and being able to tell her so.
Many husbands dread this kind of shopping. It places them in the women's section of a department store, and seems to encourage a practice that's had frightening effects on the family checkbook. Yet, a woman who's confident of her beauty (because her husband so affirms her) may feel less of a need for an inexhaustible supply of frills to make her feel pretty.
