Men of Integrity, January/February 2004

Theme of the Week: Delivering the Goods
Monday, February 2

Key Bible Verse: "Unless you are faithful in small matters, you won't be faithful in larger ones" (Luke 16:10). Bonus Reading: Luke 16:10–15

Dad and I had spent the day golfing. We were starving. We drove into town in our 1965 Pontiac Star Chief and headed straight for the Wendy's drive-through window. Dad ordered a whole sack of food. When we pulled up to pay at the window, Dad got a funny look on his face. "I don't think I have any money on me," he said.

"Take a check?" Dad calmly asked the attendant. The young girl left her post for a moment, and returned to inform us that her manager had said no. "Well, that's all I got," my dad responded. To my utter astonishment, the manager leaned through the window and announced, "Don't worry about it," and waved us on through. Whoa! I thought that was the coolest trick I'd ever seen! I couldn't wait until I was old enough to try it myself.

Next Sunday, we stopped at Wendy's after church. I was standing directly behind Dad as he rattled off the menu items for the five of us. He paid what was due and then said, "Hey, by the way, I was in here a couple of days ago. I didn't have any money then, and I owe you." He then proceeded to settle up accounts. That was a silent lesson that this seventh grader would never forget.

—Paul Pettit in Dynamic Dads

My Response: What lessons could others draw from corners I will or won't cut?

Thought to Apply: There is no such thing as a minor lapse of integrity. —Tom Peters (business trainer)
