John Bunyan knew that if he showed up at the Bedfordshire, England, meeting house that Sunday in 1660 to preach, a constable would be waiting with a warrant for his arrest. Now that the Royalists were back in power, anyone not licensed by the state church no longer had the right to preach. But Bunyan reasoned, "What will my weak and newly converted brethren think of it, but that I was not so strong in deed as I was in word? If I should run, I might make them afraid to stand. I will not stop speaking the Word of God."
The judges sent Bunyan to jail. His first stint was for six years. Then he was in and out of jail for six years more. But he never budged. "If I come to any place where people are met together," he wrote, "I will, according to the best of my skill and wisdom, exhort and counsel them to seek after the Lord Jesus Christ, for the salvation of their souls. He who stops preaching the Word of God for fear of the excommunication of men is already excommunicated of God, and shall in the day of judgment be counted a traitor to Christ. If I was out of prison today, I would preach the gospel again tomorrow."
