Men of Integrity, January/February 2004

Classy Commitment
Theme of the Week: Delivering the Goods
Tuesday, February 3

Key Bible Verses: Those who … keep their promises even when it hurts … such people will stand firm forever (Psalm 15:4, 5). Bonus Reading: Psalm 15:1–5

In 1947, a University of Chicago professor was scheduled to teach a class in advanced astrophysics. Dr. Chandrasekhar was living in Wisconsin where he was doing research for an upcoming conference. He planned to commute to Chicago twice a week, even though it was a winter quarter class. He'd encounter the worst weather the Midwest could throw at him.

The professor had second thoughts about teaching the course when he heard that only two students had signed up for it. He thought of the distance, the time away from his family, and the snow and ice. But then he thought of the two students. Perhaps these two would be worth the time investment. He decided to follow through on his commitment to teach.

Ten years later, in 1957, Dr. Chandrasekhar was pleased to hear that the two young men who made up his class—Chen Ning Yang and Tsung-Dao Lee—both were awarded the Nobel Prize in physics.

In 1983, Dr. Chandrasekhar received the same honor. The professor who was willing to teach just two young, motivated students, obviously passed along some character values in addition to the content of the syllabus.

—Steve Farrar in CBMC Contact

My Response: What would change if the two students had little potential?

Thought to Apply: Integrity is keeping my commitment even if the circumstances when I made the commitment have changed. —David Jeremiah (California pastor)

I thank You, Father, that You are a promise-keeping God. Give me the backbone to reflect Your character.
