Men of Integrity, January/February 2004

Strong to the Finish
Theme of the Week: Steady, Boys, Steady
Sunday, January 11

Key Bible Verse: I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful (2 Timothy 4:7). Bonus Reading: Mark 4:3–9, 14–20

Mickey Thompson used to be one of the most recognized names in auto racing. His team built the fastest cars on the track. They could fly! But not one of those cars ever brought Thompson a checkered flag. That's right—although his cars took the lead in the first 29 races they entered, they never won a race. Why? Because they didn't finish.

Thompson could make cars that were good starters and the fastest runners, but he couldn't build them to last. They all broke down during the race. Engines blew. Gearboxes broke. Carburetors failed.

We need to end the race of the Christian life well. The apostle Paul is an example of a good finisher. He served Christ in spite of almost unbearable hardship and persecutions. At the close of his life, he confidently said, "I have remained faithful."

What about you? Has something stalled your Christian growth? Have you had a "breakdown"? Confess your sins, make the necessary repairs, and get back into the race. Don't give up, Jesus will help you be a good finisher!

0  Prayer for the Week 0

Sovereign Lord, keep me from envying the accomplishments of others. Instead, make me grateful for and content with the gifts You've entrusted to me.
