Men of Integrity, January/February 2004

Luminary or Guidestar?
Theme of the Week: Steady, Boys, Steady
Friday, January 16

Key Bible Verse: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Bonus Reading: Heb. 10:32–38

Where I live, you face south to view planets, the moon, the signs of the zodiac, and most of the nebulae and star clusters. If you face north, you'll see no bright stars, few interesting galaxies. The constellations rotate around Polaris—a very dim, slightly green star also called the North Star. When it's first pointed out to them, people often say, "Oh, I thought it would be brighter." But when sailors or astronauts are lost, they look for this dim little star to regain their sense of direction.

We look up to people described as "stars," and feel small and insignificant compared to their apparent brilliance. They move across the sky of life, attracting attention and admiration. Like the moon they change their faces to suit the season. Like the sun they burn hot. Like meteors they may burn up quickly.

Let's become North Star people. Seldom will people point their telescopes at us. And when they do they may respond, "Oh, I thought he'd be brighter." But we can serve a deeper purpose. When people need us, we can be there for them, pointing the Way. While the world spins at a dizzying pace, we can remain less dazzling but unmovable.

—Michael Card in Scribbling in the Sand

My Response: Who's a North Star person that I've appreciated?

Thought to Apply: We need to learn to set our course by the stars and not by the lights of every passing ship. —Omar Bradley (World War II general)

0  Prayer for the Week 0

Sovereign Lord, keep me from envying the accomplishments of others. Instead, make me grateful for and content with the gifts You've entrusted to me.
