When in Doubt …
Theme of the Week: Step-at-a-Time Guidance

Key Bible Verse: Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God's will Hebrews 10:36). Bonus Reading:Psalm 73:21-28

I have noticed that some who appear so full of certainty and direction at one point can wind up uncertain at another. A friend, a pediatric ophthalmologist now in his mid-40s, toys with the idea of chucking his career. Improving the sight of children, at least in the new environment of corporate medicine, and his lucrative job now feel meaningless to him.

"Maybe I'll become a studio musician," he says. He likes to play electric guitar. I suspect that through medical school, residency, and pediatric ophthalmology fellowships, he was certain about his future vocation. Now he's casting about.

During a stretch of uncertainty of mine, a friend gave me practical advice: "Dave, you may not know what God wants you to do in the next five years. But God has a specific plan for your life today. Go to work and do the best job you can. Go home and love your wife and kids. Fulfill your responsibility."

He was stating the obvious that in my anxiety I'd overlooked. My uncertainty was inadvertently crippling my ability to do God's known will. So—when in doubt about your next step, refocus on what you know for certain.

My Response: Am I casting about? What certainties should I focus on?

0Prayer for the Week

Sovereign Lord, teach me to trust You for the next step, even when I can't see the big picture.
