Get Growing Again
Theme of the Week: A Spiritual Workout
Sunday, April 11
Key Bible Verse: "Don't copy the behavior ... of this world, but let God transform ... the way you think" (Romans 12:2). Bonus Reading: Romans 12:13
At the pinnacle of D. L. Moody's career, he knew that he'd grown stale. He was leading huge evangelistic campaigns in Great Britain and the United States, but he'd grown spiritually malnourished. Moody's biographer, John Pollock, notes, "At the moment of reaching a height of influence in the United States, he stood in danger of spiritual insolvency." Moody realized he'd told people all he knew and had nothing new to say.
Moody moved to Northfield, Massachusetts, and refused to accept major speaking engagements until he'd studied enough to have fresh, new insights from God's Word. He set a rigid schedule that included six hours of study every morning. Even after he began traveling again, Moody carried a small library. Despite the demands placed on his time, he was determined to continue learning so he could be an effective spiritual leader.
Wise leaders continually learn from the events of their lives and studies. They never stop learning and evaluating, so they never stop growing.
