Men of Integrity, March/April 2004

Common Denominator
Theme of the Week: United for Impact
Tuesday, April 20

Key Bible Verse: No one is able to say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3). Bonus Reading: Mark 9:38–41

In the 1960s through the ´80s, Arthur Burns was chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve System and the ambassador to West Germany. As a personal friend and economic counselor to a long line of U.S. presidents, he wielded huge influence.

He was also Jewish. So it was a surprise when in the ´70s he began to show up regularly at a Christian group that met weekly for fellowship and prayer at the White House. He was welcomed. But not one knew quite what to do with him. Week after week, year after year, people took turns ending the meeting in prayer. But Burns was never asked to do this.

One day, the group leader was a newcomer who didn't know Burns. At the end of the meeting, he turned to Burns and asked him to close in prayer. Some who'd attended for a long time looked askance at each other. What would Burns do?

He never flinched. He joined hands with the others in the circle, bowed his head, and said, "Lord, I pray that you would bring Jews to know Jesus Christ. I pray that you would bring Muslims to know Jesus Christ. Finally, Lord, I pray that you would bring Christians to know Jesus Christ. Amen."

—Os Guinness in The Call

My Response: How can I connect with a believer whom I would normally avoid?

Thought to Apply: Has it ever occurred to you that 100 pianos all tuned to the same fork are automatically tuned to each other? —A. W. Tozer (Illinois pastor, writer)

0  Prayer for the Week 0

Lord, turn my critical eyes inward so I may grow in grace. Transform my snap judgments of other Christians into prayer, understanding, and service.
