Men of Integrity, March/April 2004

Busted
Theme of the Week: Dealing with My Defects
Sunday, April 25

Key Bible Verse: Examine yourselves to see if your faith is really genuine. Test yourselves (2 Corinthians 13:5). Bonus Reading: Romans 8:12-14

Ben Johnson, the Canadian speedster, and Carl Lewis, the great American hope, went head-to-head in the 100-meter run at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. At 30 meters Johnson was a half-stride ahead of Lewis. No problem. Lewis was a strong finisher, Johnson a fader. But at 50 meters Johnson had a full meter lead. By the 80-meter mark, he'd extended it to two. Lewis couldn't close the gap. The timekeepers were stunned: 9.79 seconds. The Canadian had broken his own world record. Lewis finished a distant second at 9.92, still his personal best and the American record.

Ben Johnson was presented the gold medal. But behind the scenes, the Olympic Doping Control Laboratory routinely tested for banned substances. One urine sample showed stanazol, an illegal anabolic steroid. Repeated tests confirmed it.

The International Olympic Committee stripped Johnson of his gold medal. The next day it was awarded to Carl Lewis. The record that Johnson brazenly predicted would last over 50 years didn't even stand for 50 hours! As we run God's race, we must guard against the constant threat of disqualification.
