One-Track Ministry
Theme of the Week: Serving with a Passion
Michael W. Smith
Monday, March 15, 2004

Key Bible Verse: Our goal is to stay within the boundaries of God's plan for us (2 Corinthians 10:13). Bonus Reading:1 Peter 4:10–11

I started Rocketown Records in 1996 to create a label that nurtured new talent. I'm definitely not the right person to run the day-to-day operations of a record label, so my friend Don Donahue, who formerly worked for Reunion, came on board as president. As we explored our options for a debut album, Don remembered songs by a singer/songwriter he'd heard while at Reunion. Don gave me a custom CD Chris Rice had made with a Nashville producer. I was blown away by his talent as a writer, vocalist, and guitarist.

We scheduled a meeting to talk to Chris. Instead of dressing to impress us, he arrived in cut-off jeans and a T-shirt from a camp where he'd just been the featured musician. "You guys need to know something up front," Chris told us. "Doing camps and retreats with teenagers—that's the reason I'm alive. If I could never sing again, I'd still do what I do."

We talked for a long time about his experiences in ministering to students, with this guy who was completely unimpressed by the possibility of becoming a well-known artist. As our conversation ended, Chris said, "I'd be glad to do a record with you, but I won't let you try to change who I am or what I do."

—Michael W. Smith in Your Place in This World

My Response: A ministry I've identified to focus on is …

Thought to Apply: To be nobody-but-yourself in a world doing its best to make you everybody-else means to fight the hardest battle.

—E. E. Cummings (poet and painter)
