While a pro basketball player was being interviewed, the conversation turned to the size of his feet. He took off a shoe and had the interviewer hold one of his up against it. The player, whose shoe dwarfed the interviewer's shoe, joked, "You should have seen the size of the box it came in. Somebody could have lived in that thing!"
I began to think of ways we use shoeboxes, such as places for hiding things. A friend of mine had such a shoebox. She'd secretly been writing short stories, but stuffed them out of sight in a shoebox. Eventually she allowed me to read one. Well-crafted, it wonderfully demonstrated the grace of God. Yet it had been confined to the darkness of a cardboard box where its powerful message benefited no one.
Countless God-inspired drawings, crafts, and sheets of music and writing are tucked away under beds and on the closet top shelves—exactly where Satan wants them. He must love shoeboxes, especially those for big feet!
God's given each of us gifts and talents to be used for His glory, not hidden. Let's dust off our shoeboxes and boldly use our abilities to reach and encourage others.
