A riot erupted in a Texas trail town and soon escalated into community war. As the death toll rose and the destruction of property mounted, the Texas Rangers were telegraphed: "Town in riot. Many dead. Send help."
The comforting answer from Ranger headquarters: "Help on tomorrow's train."
A citizens' committee waited anxiously on the platform for the promised contingent of Rangers to arrive and quell the riot. The few arriving passengers stepped down from the train and scurried off to safety. At last, a single, lanky Ranger, his badge obvious against his blue shirt, stepped down from the last car. Their hopes for a quick end to the riot were dashed.
"You're alone?" they wailed. "We have a riot here and the Rangers promised help, not one man."
His classic response: "One riot, one Ranger."
As believers, we mustn't overestimate the enemy, destroying faith, eroding confidence, and warping perspective. And, more important, never underestimate the "Ranger" sent to rescue us.
