Men of Integrity May/June 2004 Temple Specs Theme of the Week: A Diverse Communion Monday, June 7 7 3

Key Bible Verse: The Lord is in his holy Temple. Let all the earth be silent before him (Habakkuk 2:20). Bonus Reading:Matthew 18:20

Their little church seemed to be made of firewood. It looked like the walls—rough-hewn vertical lengths of jungle timber—could scarcely hold up the roof. The woven grass thatch looked too sparse to keep out the rain.

We joined the 30 or so who'd come to worship and pray. So respectfully. So sincerely. Because of rebel activity in Guatemala's Mayaland, the village of these peasant farmers was under siege from the military. Treated like intruders in their own homes, and too poor to build a structure of any substance, these men and women nevertheless found strength and solace in a simple place of worship. Where else could they go—but to the God they loved?

A rudely constructed wooden table formed the altar at the front. Draped over the table, in contrast to the brown dirt of the floor and the black of the timbers, was a spotless, white cloth. Roughly embroidered on it were words in the local language. I assumed they were Scripture, and wondered which one. As I walked toward the front, I saw the small letters, "Habakkuk 2:20." Then I knew [it was today's Key Bible Verse].

My Response: When have I realized that spiritual ties are stronger than those of blood or culture?
