Elevating Two Heart Rates Theme of the Week: 'Can You Hear Me?' James Hilt Tuesday, June 1, 2004

Key Bible Verse: Suddenly Jesus himself came along and joined them and began walking beside them (Luke 24:15). Bonus Reading:Luke 25:13—32
Back in the 1970s, I was faced with normal distractions at home (the telephone, TV, and so on) when I tried to create a concentrated time with God. So I decided to leave my home shortly after waking up in the morning for prayer, combining this with riding my mountain bike. I rode each morning to a predetermined place and back to assure a certain time-frame.
I figured if the two on the way to Emmaus could speak to the risen Lord while walking with Him, I could do the same on my bike. The invigoration of riding made me more alert, helping me focus better on God. Nature in-spired me to praise Him for creating it. I mixed speaking to God, as I would to a friend, with just being silent before Him. That's when thoughts—ones I sensed came from Him—sometimes popped into my mind.
During the winter months, I took to walking, again to a predetermined place and back to assure a certain time-frame. The fact that riding and walking are great aerobic exercises that fortify my heart and circulation is a bonus. More important, following this practice has given me a new heart for God, a deepening sense of bonding to my unseen Companion.

My Response: To focus better on God, a time and place I could set is …
Thought to Apply: Give yourself time to be silent and quiet before Him, waiting to receive the assurance of His presence with you.
