Ushering Guidelines Theme of the Week: A Diverse Communion E.V. Hill Thursday, June 10, 2004

Key Bible Verse: With my whole being, body and soul, I will shout joyfully to the living God (Psalm 84:2). Bonus Reading:Psalm 84:1—4, 10—12
Scripture says we ought to have hope. I'm not talking about invisible hope. I'm talking about hope that's obvious.
I remember my first year at Mount Zion. Every time I started preaching and folks got happy, ushers would drag 'em out. Get a little fire started over here, and they'd drag 'em out. Somebody looks like they might shout over here, drag 'em out.
So I went to an usher board meeting and said, "I want to ask you a question. I confess that I'm a little new here. Why do you all drag out folks that seem to be getting a little happy?"
They said, "Oh, pastor, we don't want them to disturb your preaching."
I said, "That's very nice and kind of you, but I want you to stop that. How can I get a fire started when every log that starts burning, you drag it out?"
Then I said, "If you really want to help, and you want to take out the one that's disturbing me, then that deacon who's asleep down there, take him out! That's really disturbing me. Here I am preaching my heart out, and he's down there asleep. Take him out, walk him around, and wake him up."

My Response: Is my abandon or reserve in worship more a function of my spiritual fervor or of my culture?
Thought to Apply: In the church of God two opposite dangers are to be recognized and avoided: they are a cold heart and a hot head.
