Flawed Model Theme of the Week: A Man of Significance Robert Lewis Monday, June 14, 2004
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think (Romans 12:2). Bonus Reading:Ecclesiastes 2:4—11
The conventional vision of manhood has five characteristics:
Second, because a man's identity arises from his work, his value is earned; so he becomes highly competitive. The conventional man's objective is to out-think, out-work, out-play, and out-earn the other guy.
Third, success is the goal—often at the expense of one's marriage, children, and meaningful, close relationships.
Fourth, the reward of reaching a level of success is power. A man commands the respect and attention of those around him, with a power that can be intoxicating if he isn't careful.
And finally, if a man becomes successful in this plan, he enjoys personal wealth and affluence. He is admired by the world and privileged to do what others can't.
The problem with this model of manhood isn't that it's wrong, but that it's incomplete. The problem is in thinking this is all of life when, in fact, it's only a part.

My Response: How closely does my idea of success match this conventional measure?

Help me grasp, Lord, that my identity and value go way deeper than what I do for a living. And thank You for making this so.
